Gurney House Nainital

Back in the 1800s, serving as the summer abode to famous British hunter, tracker and naturalist, Jim Corbett, was the Gurney house in Nainital. Now a privately-owned property by the Dalmia's, gurney house serves as a heritage site. The Gurney house is a cottage located amidst the lush greens of Nainital at a 10 minutes' walk from the Mall Road, uphill. It was constructed in the year 1880 for Jim Corbett who used to visit the place during summers.


One of the meanings of Gurney is a house made from the carted remains of a broken or dismantled house. The Gurney house was constructed from the remains of a dismantled house on Alma Hill which got destroyed in a landslide, hence getting the name. The Gurney house is a cozy, old cottage which so is so naturally preserved that it gives its visitors a feel of how Jim Corbett used to live.

Jim Corbett used to visit the cottage during summers while on a hunt for man-eating animals. The cottage still beholds all the prized possessions of Jim Corbett like his trophies, fishing rod, African Drum, furniture and books.


The cottage is built in colonial style surrounded by garden and lawn on all four sides. You have to get an appointment in order to explore the Gurney House.
